Scroll Co-Founder Sandy Peng On Building Next-Generation Web3 Applications

SmartCon 2024 featured presentations from more than 100 blockchain industry pioneers and financial leaders, who gathered to highlight the convergence of TradFi and DeFi into a more efficient global financial system. To delve deeper into the most groundbreaking topics from this year’s event, Nasdaq TradeTalks host Jill Malandrino interviewed some of the most influential speakers on-site at Hong Kong’s Kerry Hotel.

Sandy Peng is the co-founder of zkEVM layer-2 Scroll. She sat down with Malandrino to explore what the next phase of web3 innovation could look like.

Peng explained how Scroll leverages zk-rollup technology to create a highly secure, decentralized, censorship-resistant network that supports scalable, cost-effective, feature-rich dApps backed by Ethereum’s security.

“What this means for builders and end users is that you can trust this decentralized platform for building DeFi, GameFi, and various applications in a way that is permissionless and doesn’t involve any middlemen. You don’t need to trust any centralized entities; what you trust is cryptographic proofs and this decentralized consensus mechanism.”

Last year, Scroll joined Chainlink Scale to expand its ecosystem by giving developers enhanced access to essential infrastructure such as Chainlink Data Feeds. In October, Scroll integrated Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) to facilitate advanced cross-chain applications.

Peng distilled how zkEVM’s instant transaction finality benefits multiple industries from finance to gaming.

“It’s helpful for anything where movement of capital or the velocity of liquidity matters for the bottom line,” she said. “And for GameFi, there are really interesting properties coming up such as gasless transactions and account abstraction onboarding to make the gamer’s experience as seamless as web2.”

Battle-tested for throughput, performance, uptime, reliability, and compatibility, Peng said Scroll now aims to enable the next generation of zero to one web3 applications.

“We’re going to be focusing on communicating what this product can do for developers and organizations. I think there’s been enough innovation within the space that it is ready to break out because it has a lot to offer to the average person.”
