During Chainlink’s 2022 SmartCon event, September 28-29 in New York City, Nasdaq TradeTalks’ Jill Malandrino hosted a two-day interview lineup with founders of influential protocols in the Chainlink ecosystem who were among the conference’s 100+ expert speakers.
After her conversation with Offchain Labs’ Chief Scientist Ed Felten about how Arbitrum’s layer-2 is accelerating web3’s evolution with Chainlink oracles, Malandrino spoke with Dawn Song, the founder of Oasis Labs, to discuss privacy-first cloud computing and the biggest opportunities in blockchain.
Song, who is a widely cited computer science scholar and professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at UC Berkeley, explained how Oasis Labs is building a privacy-first, high-performance cloud computing platform with key innovations that support advanced web3 applications.
“Oasis is a next-generation, new blockchain architecture and actually is the first one that proposes this modular architecture of separating execution from consensus to enable blockchain to have much greater scalability,” she said.
Because Oasis’ layered architecture separates execution from consensus, it’s able to provide stronger privacy capabilities. “We are actually enabling this new privacy computing capability in conjunction with blockchain,” Song explained.
These technologies support new use cases that assetize data, allow users to maintain control of their data, and enable data to be utilized in privacy-preserving ways.
Song described Oasis’ newly launched product, Sapphire, as the first confidential Ethereum virtual machine (EVM) through which any Solidity-based smart contract application can acquire out-of-the-box confidentiality.
When asked about the greatest opportunities she sees in the blockchain space, Song said, “Privacy is absolutely missing and is absolutely essential. With Oasis’ new technology of Sapphire, this confidential EVM, we really hope that this can be a gamechanger for that.”
