This week, Chainlink Labs’ Chief Business Officer, Johann Eid, joined DeFi Dad and Nomatic on The Edge Podcast to discuss Chainlink’s role across emerging industries from prediction markets to AI and how Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) is building a secure foundation for onchain finance.
Eid described crypto’s dramatic shift over the past ten years.
“Crypto went from being a fairy tale to being something that every institution around the world knows about, and having very concrete use cases which have changed the way people do things today.”
He said TradFi’s biggest draw to onchain finance is the massive efficiency gains.
“A lot of TradFi is running on technologies that have been running for 50, 60 years. They’re seeing blockchain as a technology that can make their processes 10x more efficient.”
Real-world efficiency gains include a Smart NAV industry pilot leveraging DTCC’s digital asset capabilities and CCIP to demonstrate how traditional financial institutions can deliver key mutual fund data onchain.
“Basically, the chain becomes a source of truth,” Eid explained.
This coordination mechanism, which overrides the asynchronous inefficiencies of determining consensus via fax or email, is blockchain’s “killer use case.”
“Blockchain is a way to get people from the 20th century to the 21st century – from a very unipolar world, where money is concentrated in very specific areas, to a way more multipolar world, where you need to coordinate across multiple time zones and multiple countries to get the biggest distribution possible for your markets.”
However, he cautioned, this increase in efficiency demands an even greater increase in security.
“It’s something you need to be extremely paranoid about. If you’re not going to be focused on security in this space, there is no point.”
Following a LayerZero exploit that resulted in nearly $300 million in losses across DeFi, numerous top protocols representing a combined TVL of more than $7.2 billion have migrated to CCIP.
As the only interoperability standard to achieve ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type 2 attestation, CCIP maintains the industry’s highest level of cross-chain security, backed by a separate Risk Management Network. Compared to bridge solutions with only one or two centrally controlled nodes, each CCIP bridge lane is secured by at least 16 independent, security-reviewed node operators.
“We’re trying to build a fully composable world: every single asset interacting with every single protocol with every single chain,” Eid explained.
“If you’re using infrastructure, it should be secure by default. It shouldn’t be on the protocol. It shouldn’t be on the asset issuer to configure it.”
His call to action for people who care about advancing onchain finance is to put security first.
“I really don’t think this space can exist if we keep having these failures.”
He emphasized the beauty of Chainlink’s highly resilient oracle infrastructure, which has enabled over $32 trillion in transaction value, is that anyone can build an application that changes the entire world.
“If I’m a developer working by myself and I have very few resources to build a vision, I don’t want to worry about infrastructure security. I want to be able to get going and focus on my use case and focus on that only.”
Ultimately, he believes security is the spark of innovation.
“I think this space is truly beautiful, where anyone in the world can build something and change the lives of billions of people.”
