During the 2022 Chainlink SmartCon event, September 28-29 in New York City, Nasdaq TradeTalks’ Jill Malandrino hosted a two-day interview lineup at the MarketSite Studio in Times Square with some of the conference’s 100+ expert speakers from the Chainlink ecosystem.
After speaking with OTONOMI CEO Yann Barbarroux about why parametric insurance is one of web3’s most exciting use cases, Malandrino sat down with Emin Gün Sirer, the founder & CEO of Ava Labs, a team supporting the development of Avalanche. Their conversation examined innovations that are changing how people use the internet and exchange value.
“Ava Labs started off as a research project at Cornell and its mission is to build the software for creating the world’s fastest, safest, most decentralized blockchains,” Sirer said.
Since launching in 2020, Avalanche’s novel consensus mechanism and near-instant transaction finality have made it one of the fastest-growing blockchain ecosystems. In 2021, Chainlink Price Feeds went live on Avalanche mainnet, followed by Chainlink Keepers and VRF (Verifiable Random Function) in 2022.
Avalanche’s ecosystem features a collection of chains that are built to scale.
“Avalanche brought to the space a new consensus platform that enables any and every one of our chains to go at lightning-fast speeds,” Sirer said. “But, in addition, there is never going to be a single chain that can conquer all of the load that is incident on it from all of the different kinds of assets.”
This is why Avalanche introduced subnets as one of its principle means of scaling. Sirer explained how subnets facilitate the creation of application-specific chains that can be compliant with whatever rules or jurisdictional requirements are necessary.
At this year’s Avalanche Summit, Sirer joined Chainlink co-founder Sergey Nazarov to outline how developers building on Avalanche are using Chainlink’s industry-standard oracle infrastructure to create next-gen web3 applications. Sirer explained to Malandrino why he believes building essential web3 infrastructure is so important right now.
“It’s very, very clear to everyone that crypto is here to stay. And very clearly what’s going on right now is that the various different players are jockeying for position so that they can be the winners.”
He continued, “We’re furiously building at Ava Labs, furiously building on top of the Avalanche platform, and furiously enabling other people to spawn off their own blockchains and application-specific solutions on top of our platform.”
