Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) is the industry standard for digital asset and data transfer used by leading blockchains, layer-2s, DeFi protocols, and traditional financial institutions to unlock new use cases and markets for crypto, stablecoins, and tokenized assets.
Today, BOB (Build on Bitcoin), a hybrid layer-2 designed to unlock Bitcoin DeFi (BTCFi), announced it’s adopting the Chainlink standard by integrating CCIP as the canonical cross-chain infrastructure for tokens native to the BOB network.
BOB’s unique hybrid layer-2 brings Ethereum’s DeFi innovation and versatility to the BTC ecosystem with the goal of positioning Bitcoin as the “backbone of DeFi” and unlocking trillions of dollars in BTC liquidity. BOB uses Babylon Bitcoin staking and BitVM to create trust-minimized bridges to Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other layer-1s. CCIP will complement BOB’s trust-minimized BitVM bridge to Bitcoin and native bridge to Ethereum.
Leveraging Chainlink’s battle-tested decentralized oracle network, which has enabled over $18 trillion in transaction value across 20+ blockchains, CCIP achieves the highest level of cross-chain security and features a separate Risk Management Network that independently monitors for suspicious activity. The new CCIP v1.5 upgrade allows developers on supported blockchains to turn any ERC-20-compatible token into a Cross-Chain Token (CCT).
In an official announcement, BOB co-founder Alexei Zamyatin described integrating CCIP as “another big step” toward fulfilling BOB’s hybrid layer-2 roadmap.
“This integration of the Chainlink standard not only expands BOB’s capabilities but also aligns us with Chainlink’s extensive ecosystem, accelerating accessibility of Bitcoin DeFi,” he said.
“BOB is playing an important role in fueling BTCFi by bringing about cutting-edge innovation on Bitcoin that can support the ecosystem’s continued scalability,” added Johann Eid, Chief Business Officer at Chainlink Labs.
“CCIP is a natural fit to give developers on BOB the tools they need to build highly secure and feature-rich cross-chain applications. We’re excited to see how they leverage the Chainlink standard.”
