August was full of exciting web3 developments in the Chainlink ecosystem.
Sony Block Solutions Labs, a joint venture between Sony Group Corporation and Startale, announced the development of Soneium, an Ethereum layer-2 designed to unlock web3’s global adoption. Leading Ethereum scaling solution, Optimism, and industry-standard decentralized computing platform, Chainlink, were named as official launch partners.
Conceived as a “powerful playground” for web3 visionaries, Soneium will leverage Sony Group’s vast global distribution network and essential blockchain infrastructure such as Chainlink’s comprehensive suite of web3 services to bridge the gap between blockchain innovation and everyday consumer applications.
“We are excited to support Soneium’s vision through the Chainlink platform, enabling Soneium to extensively impact the current blockchain landscape and drive adoption both regionally, in markets like Japan, and globally,” said Chainlink Labs Chief Business Officer Johann Eid.
Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP), the industry standard for cross-chain digital asset and data transfer, went live as the canonical cross-chain infrastructure for Metis, a permissionless Ethereum layer-2 network and one of the first members of the Chainlink Scale program.
“With Chainlink CCIP now live as Metis’ canonical cross-chain infrastructure, developers can unlock an array of transformative cross-chain use cases,” said Metis co-founder Kevin Liu. “With cross-chain applications underpinned by the industry-standard CCIP, liquidity is set to flow into Metis’ ecosystem and help scale DeFi.”
Another Scale member, Base – the fast layer-2 incubated by Coinbase and secured by Ethereum – announced its integration of Chainlink Data Streams and VRF (Verifiable Random Function), making the entire suite of Chainlink’s oracle services available to developers building next-gen applications on Base.
Synthetix, the liquidity layer for onchain derivatives powering over 80 Synthetix Perps markets, announced its centrally governing Spartan Council voted unanimously in favor of integrating Data Streams into Synthetix V3 on Arbitrum, the most widely used layer-2 scaling solution for Ethereum. A Synthetix Improvement Proposal details how Data Streams “significantly enhances the performance, security, and reliability” of markets on the Synthetix protocol.
Leading DeFi protocol Aave launched Aave V3 on ZKsync Era, a hyperfast layer-two network developed by Matter Labs and a member of Chainlink Scale. Aave users can now access low-cost transactions powered by advanced zero-knowledge technology and Chainlink’s highly reliable price data.
